Replying to A personal view from Michael Nunn
I agree with all of Michael's points. I have worked on the Market Square info stall and I have been struck by the comments of all the tourists I have talked to. The main reason they are visiting Lancaster is due to the pleasantness of the surroundings and the compactness of the city. Most tourists come from places which are already full blown clone towns. They come to Lancaster precisely because we do not have huge department stores, although most tourists have griped about access to the city because of gridlock.
Our tourist officers should be actively fighting the Centros proposals not tamely accepting council decisions, because employees in the tourist industry know (or should do) what it is that tourists want i.e historical sites, independent shops, and pleasant surroundings.
