Public Facilities
Cultural Quarter
Centros Miller made much mileage over the cultural quarter aspects of their 2007 plans but the fact is that it added nothing significant which was not already there and the financial requirements they imposed meant that we would almost certainly have seen a loss of existing cultural facilities. In fact, the dance studio was slated for demolition in the previous plans and no provision was made to relocate it in the proposed Centros development, so they found new premises before the planning applications were even submitted. Cultural additions to the site will be exclusively in the way of bars, cafes and restaurants.
Amenities for Youth
Centros have made no provision for any youth facilities in their plans and once again local youth is being left out of the equation. This would have been a good opportunity for councillors to contribute positively to a problem which has blighted other towns. A youth centre could give some disenfranchised young people an opportunity to do something other than hang around on the streets.
Theatres & Musician's Co-op
The theatres and musicians co-op will need to stump up very large sums of cash to take advantage of the opportunities Centros has offered them. If the musicians co-op cannot obtain this additional financial backing it looks more than likely that it will not survive.
