PPS6 sets out the Government's policy on planning for the future of town centres and the main uses that relate to them.. It replaces revised Planning Policy Guidance Note 6: Town Centres and Retail Developments (PPG6) published in 1996 and subsequent policy statements.

This consultation on revisions to PPS 6 follows the commitment in the Planning White Paper 'Planning for a Sustainable Future' to review the current approach in PPS6 to assessing the impact of proposals outside town centres, in a way which maintains a strong focus on our town centre first policy, and which promotes competition and improves consumer choice.
